JOINT PAIN RELIEF & VISCOSUPPLEMENTATION INJECTIONS
Viscosupplementation is a medical procedure used to treat osteoarthritis by injecting hyaluronic acid directly into the joint. Hyaluronic acid is a substance naturally found in joint fluid, which helps to lubricate and cushion the joint. The goal of viscosupplementation is to supplement the joint’s natural supply of hyaluronic acid, which can be depleted in individuals with osteoarthritis. This better cushioning is designed to improve pain and potentially slow the progression of osteoarthritis.
How long will the pain relief last?
Individual responses can vary widely, but medical studies suggest that viscosupplementation usually takes several weeks to provide noticeable relief. The benefits typically last 4 to 6 months, though some patients experience longer-lasting improvement. Your personal response is the best indicator of how long the effects will persist. Follow-up frequency will be adjusted accordingly with your provider. On average, most patients require about two injections per year to maintain symptom control.
Which areas can be treated with viscosupplementation?
While any joint can potentially benefit from viscosupplementation, the knee, hip, and shoulder joints are the most extensively studied and most commonly treated. The suitability of viscosupplementation for other joints can be assessed on a case-by-case basis by your healthcare provider.
Cost & Referral Details
The cost of viscosupplementation is $490 per joint, which includes both the Durolane product and the ultrasound-guided injection procedure. Patients can be referred by their family doctor to Dr. Boomgaardt or may choose to self-refer.
For self-referral cases, an initial consultation fee of $200 applies, with follow-up visits at $100 each.
Viscosupplementation Covered by OHIP or Private Insurance?
While viscosupplementation is not currently covered by OHIP, many private insurance plans offer at least partial reimbursement for this treatment.
For example, Canada Life may cover up to 80% of injectable costs (to a maximum of $600 per year), and Blue Cross often provides full coverage for viscosupplementation.
